LeBron James and Anthony Davis are expected to return to the court during the Los Angeles Lakers’ first two preseason games this weekend, following a busy summer that included Olympic gold for both superstars. New Lakers head coach JJ Redick confirmed on Thursday that the duo will participate in one or both games as the Lakers face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday and the Phoenix Suns on Sunday in Palm Desert, California.
“They’re going to play this weekend, but we’re still talking through what minutes and rotations look like for everybody,” Redick said after the team’s third practice of training camp. The exact number of minutes James and Davis will play is still being determined, as the Lakers balance early-season preparation with maintaining their health.
James, entering his 22nd NBA season, tying Vince Carter for the longest career in league history, is returning after a busy offseason. After winning Olympic gold in Paris with Davis, he took an extended vacation in Europe before getting back into training last month. The four-time MVP, known for his rigorous offseason routines, has been preparing for what could be another milestone-filled year.
Anthony Davis, who played a career-high 76 games last season, also looks to be in prime form heading into the new season. His health is a crucial factor for the Lakers, who rely on his dominant presence on both ends of the floor.
While LeBron and Davis have been gearing up for the season, the Lakers’ camp has also been buzzing with excitement over the inclusion of LeBron’s son, Bronny James, who has been showing promise in practice. The younger James has been making headlines with his performance, including a notable moment where he hit a three-pointer over his father, sparking some competitive banter among the team.
“It’s fantastic to be able to be here and witness it in practice,” Davis said. “Bronny hit a 3 over (LeBron), (and) everybody was talking smack in Bronny’s favour. Then Bron came down and just bullied somebody and got a layup. … Even though they weren’t matched up, the competition is there, and that’s what we love to see.”
Bronny, who turns 20 this Sunday, is expected to get significant playing time in the preseason, though he will likely spend most of the regular season with the South Bay Lakers, the Lakers’ G League affiliate.
The Lakers are playing their entire preseason schedule on the road while their home arena undergoes renovations. They will open the regular season at home against Minnesota on October 22.
