LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, etched their names into the NBA record books by becoming the first father-son duo to share the court during an official game. The historic moment occurred during the Los Angeles Lakers’ pre-season match against the Phoenix Suns on October 6.
Although the Lakers lost 118-114, the significance of the night transcended the result, as the two Jameses played side by side in a landmark moment for the league.
Bronny, celebrating his 20th birthday, made his NBA debut in the second quarter of the game. It was a milestone that no father and son had ever achieved in the NBA, including in pre-season contests. Reflecting on the surreal experience, LeBron shared his thoughts both online and with reporters.
“WOW THAT WAS SURREAL,” LeBron posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the game. He later expanded on the moment in a press conference, saying, “We came out of a timeout and we kind of stood next to each other. I kind of looked at him. It was like being in *The Matrix* or something. It just didn’t feel real. But it was great to have those moments.”
LeBron, entering his 22nd season in the NBA at age 39, showed his typical all-around brilliance, scoring 19 points while adding four assists and five rebounds. Bronny, meanwhile, finished scoreless in his 13 minutes on the court, but contributed two rebounds and recorded four turnovers as he adjusted to the pace of professional basketball.
Bronny joined the Lakers earlier this year as a second-round draft pick out of the University of Southern California, following in his father’s legendary footsteps. LeBron, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and a four-time NBA champion, has long expressed his dream of playing alongside his son. That dream materialized in this pre-season game, as both players donned the iconic purple and gold jerseys together.
LeBron recently signed a two-year extension with the Lakers, which aligns with Bronny’s rookie deal, fueling hopes of further father-son moments throughout the upcoming season. The Lakers will officially open their 2024-25 campaign on October 22, facing the Minnesota Timberwolves after the Boston Celtics take on the New York Knicks.
This historic game marks not only a special chapter in the James family legacy but also a unique moment in NBA history, setting a precedent for future generations.
