It was quite a weekend in China as countries struggled to keep themselves in the competition. Indeed, it was a series of very interesting and action-packed games, with some, very, surprising results.
One of the most shocking things is that Nigeria defeated China 86 – 73 in the classifications round. What this means is that Nigeria has clinched the opportunity to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, being the only African team to do so. For China, it seems like quite a big disappointment for the mere fact that they are the host team. To that effect, they would be out in the Olympics.
Next up, the USA continues to fly the victory flag as they beat Greece. The USA has, so far, established a spotless record, winning all their games till date. This places them at an advantage since they qualify to the round of 8, whether or not they beat Brazil. Although, Team USA still continues to fly high after defeating Brazil 89 – 73.
As it stands now, USA is a big deciding factor on if Czech makes it to the next stage. Greece faced Czech in the early hours of Monday and emerged the winner. However, Greece needed at least a 12-point lead over Czech, while hoping for a USA win over Brazil in order for them to have a chance at the quarterfinals. But the game ended 84 – 77. Now, it is Czech that has a chance of progressing to the quarterfinals after the defeat of Brazil, courtesy of USA.
Australia are priced at 1.15 to claim a victory over Czech Republic. While the Czechs are priced at to steal victory 5.16.
Australia still continues to dominate like the USA, after going unbeaten in all their games so far. Their latest win against France would see them take on the quarterfinals with confidence where they face the Czech Republic. Australia’s domination does not come as a surprise since they were the team that made people doubt USA’s prospect of going far, after winning them in an exhibition match. So far, both teams have not come in contact with each other. But we may just be facing a USA v Australia final. Fingers crossed on that one.
Other teams making it to the quarterfinals include Argentina, Spain, and Serbia. By Wednesday, we would know for sure which teams get to play in the Semifinals.
USA are favoured to win the FIBA World Cup at 1.90, while close rivals Serbia are priced at 3.65.
