Kyrie Irving Sidelined with Back Injury, Adding to Mavericks’ Woes

Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is expected to miss one to two weeks due to a bulging disc in his back, adding to the team’s growing injury concerns. Head coach Jason Kidd confirmed the news ahead of the Mavericks’ Monday night matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies, though he declined to provide a definitive timeline for Irving’s return.

“He’s out, so there’s nothing I can speculate or comment on,” Kidd told reporters. “It’s been reported he’s out a week or two.” When pressed for more details, Kidd added, “Give me 48 hours to get that answer.”

Irving, who has been a vital part of Dallas’ offense, is averaging 25.6 points per game this season while shooting 50% from the field and an impressive 41.1% from beyond the arc. His absence leaves a significant void in the Mavericks’ attack, which is already struggling with the loss of star player Luka Doncic.

Doncic, the team’s leading scorer with 28.1 points per game, remains sidelined with a left calf strain. Monday’s game marks his sixth consecutive absence, leaving the Mavericks without their two biggest offensive weapons. Combined, Irving and Doncic account for 52.4 points per game, making their absence a considerable challenge for Dallas.

Kidd emphasized the need for a collective effort to compensate for the scoring shortfall. “It’s important for everyone in uniform,” Kidd said. “Being short-handed, it’s the next-man-up mentality. … We can’t replace Luka or Ky, so it’s going to take a team effort.”

The Mavericks enter Monday’s game with a 20-15 record, sitting third in the Southwest Division, three games behind the first-place Houston Rockets. The team will need contributions from across the roster to stay competitive, particularly from players like Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jaden Hardy, who are expected to shoulder more responsibility in the absence of their stars.

Irving’s injury comes at a pivotal moment in the season. The Mavericks are fighting to keep pace in a tightly contested Western Conference and cannot afford to lose ground during this challenging stretch. With no clear timeline for Irving’s or Doncic’s return, the pressure is mounting on the supporting cast to step up and deliver.

Dallas will face a tough test against the Grizzlies and in the coming weeks as they navigate a difficult schedule without their dynamic duo. For now, the Mavericks’ playoff aspirations hinge on their ability to weather the storm and find a way to win despite being shorthanded.
