Jalen Brunson Considering Max Extension with New York Knicks to Aid Title Pursuit

Jalen Brunson, the 27-year-old star guard for the New York Knicks, is reportedly contemplating a strategic financial move to bolster the team’s championship aspirations. According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, Brunson is considering accepting a four-year, $156.5 million max extension from the Knicks this offseason.

While this deal is substantial, it pales in comparison to the five-year, $269.1 million contract he would be eligible for following the 2024-25 season, which would guarantee an additional $113 million and offer an average annual value of $53.8 million versus the $39.1 million he would receive under the proposed extension.

Katz reports that Brunson’s willingness to consider the lower-value extension is rooted in a desire to help the Knicks avoid the NBA’s second apron—a punitive salary threshold that, if exceeded, significantly restricts a team’s financial and roster flexibility. Avoiding the second apron would enable the Knicks to retain and acquire key players, enhancing their chances of building a championship-caliber team.

“A league source says it’s one reason he’s considering taking the cheaper extension, which could help the Knicks avoid the second apron in the immediate future, giving the franchise a better chance to win its first championship since 1973,” Katz wrote.

Brunson’s decision is also influenced by his desire for security and loyalty to the Knicks. He values the stability of signing the deal now and has expressed a strong preference to remain in New York.

“The first reason the extension remains on the table, according to a league source, is security. Brunson has no interest in playing elsewhere, according to sources close to him. He has referred to the Knicks as ‘family’ — in some cases, literally. He chose New York because of his deep ties with team president Leon Rose, head coach Tom Thibodeau and his father being an assistant,” Katz noted.

Brunson’s stellar performance in the 2023-24 season highlights his value to the team. Averaging 28.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds over 77 games, he played a crucial role in leading the Knicks to a 50-32 record and securing the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Although the team was eliminated in the second round of the playoffs, significant roster moves, including re-signing OG Anunoby and acquiring Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, position the Knicks as strong contenders in the upcoming seasons.

By opting for the max extension now, Brunson could potentially limit the Knicks’ ability to allocate resources towards other areas of the team, which could impact their contention chances. However, this decision would also allow him to enter free agency two years earlier, potentially offering another lucrative contract opportunity later.

Brunson has until Friday, when the offer can be officially presented, to consider his options. This decision will be pivotal not only for his career but also for the Knicks’ strategy and pursuit of their first championship since 1973.
