Even before Victor Wembanyama was been as the NBA’s first draft pick by San Antonio Spurs, there have been constant comparisons of the youngster with the great LeBron James. However, former Dallas Mavericks center Brendan Haywood feels the Frenchman is not as polished as young LeBron James when he broke onto the NBA scene.
Haywood said James was a monster from the jump while Wembanyama still has a lot to learn. In fact, Victor Wembanyama has caught eyeballs in the ongoing offseason and he has shown the skills to go a long way in his career. At 2.19 meters, the Frenchman has joined the tallest players in NBA history
Speaking on an episode of No Chill with Gilbert Arenas, Haywood said, “When I look at his skill level it’s not gonna happen right away, he’s not as polished as what LeBron was coming in. Oh he’s LeBron, no he’s not.”Bron was a monster from the jump.”
He added, “Vic is in a great situation, Pop’s going to teach him how to play, and when he learns how to play they build around in the right way in about two to three years it’s gonna be a problem but it’s gonna take some time.”
Meanwhile, LeBron James was full of praise for Victor Wembanyama when he recently saw him in action while playing for French club Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92.
“I think probably the same as everybody else thinks. Everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years, but he’s more like an alien. No one has ever seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and graceful as he is on the floor. … He’s for sure a generational talent. Hopefully, he continues to stay healthy. That’s the important thing for him.”
Victor Wembanyama will look to get off the blocks in the NBA and live up to the lofty expectations. James, on the other hand, has confirmed he will take part in his 21st NBA season.
