Even before the Detroit Pistons won the lottery and signed Cade Cunningham there was hype regarding the upcoming rookie. Ever since the scout reports are out of him dominating either end of the court, fans have not stopped talking about the youngster.
The Summer League has surely acted as a trailer for what awaits from Cunningham. It is also an opportunity for the youngster to accommodate last season’s draft pick Killian Hayes. Many people believe that the duo can wreak havoc with their exceptional ball-handling skills.
However former NBA star Richard Jefferson came up with the right comparison for the 19-year-old.
While there are positives, there are negatives as well as a lot of people who feel that both Cade and Hayes are ball-dominant players and it will be difficult for the Pistons to play both of them together at the same time. But the general opinion for now has been very positive as people also feel that they may complement each other and will develop that chemistry eventually.
Just like most NBA fans Jefferson also has a lot of faith in the 19-year-old young guard. It was on ESPN’s The Jump where the former NBA Champion with the Cleveland Cavaliers said, “I like Hayes but Hayes also needs to make sure that he’s working with Cade Cunningham.”
“When I look at Cade Cunningham, I see Brandon Roy. Like Brandon Roy was one of the most impressive, right away NBA players that you could see. He was fast, but not that fast. He was quick but not that quick, he was athletic but not super athletic. But what he did was he just understood the game at an extremely high level and he didn’t have any deficiencies in his game.”
Jefferson is very impressed with the new top pick and feels that the youngster will impress everyone in the NBA as well as he is doing in the Summer League currently. Cunningham has been extremely comfortable with the ball and has already developed an understanding with Hayes in the backcourt. While the Pistons have lost matches, Cunningham has done no harm to his reputation.
The Pistons will hope that the 19-year-old point guard manages to carry his form from the Summer League to the NBA in the upcoming season.
