Philadelphia 76ers star point guard Ben Simmons was heavily criticised last season for his no show in the playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks. The Australian youngster was so much trolled and mocked by the Sixers fans that he is keen to move out of Philadelphia this offseason.
Former Lakers center and NBA analyst, Shaquille O’Neal could relate to the situation happening with Simmons. Shaq was also criticised for his lousy free throws hence the former NBA champion has sent out a piece of powerful advice for the Australian.
There is hardly any doubt that Ben Simmons is an exceptional player and has the potential to be one of the faces of the NBA in coming years. But like all other players, he also has his weaknesses which were highlighted against the Atlanta Hawks. Starting from his inability to score consistently or even in clutch situations to his struggle at the free throw line. Since that match neither the Sixers’ fans nor Simmons are interested in him staying in Philadelphia. The Australian has clearly stated that he won’t be joining training camp until he is traded.
However, Shaq does not agree with this behaviour of Ben as he gave an example of his father told him to always put on a good show. Shaq wants ben Simmons to take responsibility and convert those bad performances into good again. “You got to work on your game. I was there in Game 6 when he dribbled under the rim where he could have dunked because he didn’t want to get fouled.” Shaq said.
“Listen, I wasn’t a great free-throw shooter. But you know what? I wasn’t going to stop being aggressive because I was worried about making free throws. We’re obligated to put on a good show and obligated to work on our game. So, he has to decide for himself. Do I want to be a really good player? Or do I want to be one of the greatest?”
Shaq also made a very valid claim where he said that criticism is warranted and changing franchises for Ben won’t mean he won’t be criticised again. The Big Diesel wants the Australian point guard to not settle for a player that he is and in fact strive for greatness.
It is time that the talented point guard gives up the attempt of forcefully moving out of Philadelphia rather he should work on his flaws.
