Luka Doncic is considered one of the NBA superstars for his ability to lead the Dallas Mavericks. He can also be the face of the NBA in a few years along with some other youngsters. But media personality Colin Cowherd feels that Doncic should further assert his authority within the franchise and recruit top superstars for them like LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant do for their respective franchise. Cowherd feels that Doncic has his options: he can follow the footsteps of these star players or turn into the next James Harden from Dallas.
On Thursday on “The Herd,” Cowherd praised the Real Madrid man for his ability to dominate the basketball court. But Cowherd was also critical about how the ability dies out with more minutes as he is often gassed at the dying moments of the game where the game is often won and lost for the Mavericks.
Cowherd highlights how Doncic does not have a great supporting cast and therefore he takes the load mostly on himself. But Cowherd feels that he should act like a superstar now and recruit players just like the other mentioned superstars. He believes that the Slovenian needs to put pressure on his franchise as it is the NBA model and also feels that Doncic should take more power into his hands and influence decision making for the Mavericks.
Cowherd says that if Doncic does not help in recruiting a better supporting cast then he is very much comparable to James Harden who also likes to hog the ball and make plays and gets gassed out at the end minute of a game.
“It was about five years ago, in his prime, that we were saying James Harden was better than Kobe,” Cowherd said .”Analytically, he was the greatest, most-efficient scoring guard of all time.
“But there was a truth serum about James Harden, that he had the ball in his hands so often and he initiated so much contact he was exhausted by the end of games, he was a defensive liability. Is Luka Doncic just becoming the Dallas version, the bigger version, of James Harden?”
Doncic has been fighting tooth and nail for the Dallas Mavericks against the Phoenix Suns in the second round of the NBA playoffs. He dropped a 45 point performance in Game 1 and followed it up with another 35 pointer in Game 2 but unfortunately, the Mavericks lost both the matches. They will hope that Doncic gets more support from the other players and they manage to somehow win Game 3 or else it will get very tough for the Mavericks to contain the sweep.
