Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, has decided to keep his name in the NBA draft, setting the stage for a potential historic father-son duo in the league next season. This decision was confirmed by Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports Group, who initially revealed the news to ESPN and later to The Associated Press.
“He’s a really good prospect who has a lot of room for growth,” Paul said, highlighting Bronny’s potential and the anticipation surrounding his NBA future.
LeBron James expressed his excitement on social media, posting an Instagram story with the caption: “BRONNY STAYING IN DRAFT!” This move, while not surprising, solidifies Bronny’s commitment to entering the professional ranks, as he had shown no indication of returning to college.
Bronny James played one season of college basketball at the University of Southern California (USC). During his time with the Trojans, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game over 25 appearances. His season was initially delayed due to a congenital heart defect discovered after he suffered cardiac arrest during a summer workout. After undergoing a procedure, a panel of doctors cleared him for NBA play earlier this month.
Following his clearance, Bronny participated in the NBA draft combine, expressing his determination to succeed. “I’m just trying to put in the work and see where it takes me,” he remarked, reflecting his focus and commitment to his basketball career.
Listed at 6-foot-4 on USC’s roster, Bronny measured at 6 feet, 1 1/2 inches at the draft combine. Despite this discrepancy, his skills and potential have kept him on the radar of NBA scouts and teams. He declared for the draft in April while also entering the transfer portal, maintaining his college eligibility as a backup option. However, with the draft deadline looming at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Bronny confirmed his decision to forgo returning to college.
LeBron James, who can become a free agent this summer, is set to enter his 22nd NBA season this fall. Should Bronny make it to the NBA next season, they would become the first father-son duo to play simultaneously in the league. While approximately 100 instances exist where sons have joined the NBA following their fathers’ careers, none have played in the league concurrently.
The potential of seeing LeBron and Bronny share the NBA stage is a narrative that captivates fans and adds to the James family’s illustrious basketball legacy.
The NBA draft, scheduled for June 26-27, will be a pivotal moment for Bronny James as he embarks on his professional career. His journey from overcoming health challenges to declaring for the draft highlights his dedication. As the draft approaches, all eyes will be on Bronny, not just for his individual prospects, but also for the possibility of witnessing a landmark moment in NBA history with a father-son duo playing together.
